A Thousand Coloured Castles
A Thousand Coloured Castles
Myriam is a woman who sees things differently. Strange figures in garish costumes accompany her to the shops, wild exotic plants sprout from supermarket shelves and phantom walls rise up to block her path. Her husband Fred and daughter Claire think she's losing her mind.
But, when Myriam sees a young boy held captive in the house next door, she is determined to investigate. Myriam’s only ally is her four-year-old grandson, Jack, who is more than happy to see things her way.
Rendered entirely in wax crayon this uncanny tale plunges the reader down a rabbit hole into a hallucinatory suburbia where the boundaries between the banal and the fantastical cease to have meaning.

"A beautiful book… The way the drawings can move and coalesce from the mundane and everyday to the fantastical and unaccountable makes the hallucinatory experiences palpable and disturbing". - Mark Wallinger
"Gareth Brookes is one of the most surprising comics creators working anywhere in the world. A Thousand Coloured Castles is entirely rendered in shimmering layers of coarse waxy crayon. The effect is astonishing, unsettling and strange. An extraordinary achievement." - Dylan Horrocks
"Revelatory - a true modern visionary" - Paul Gravett
“Gentle, genteel and utterly beguiling, this is a masterpiece of British fantasy understatement with a potent underpinning of quietly desperate lives truly lived.” - Win Wiacek
